We are excited to announce that John Lusk has joined our Promus Ventures team as Partner. John brings incredible insight and operating experience to the team as a startup founder as well as CEO of various companies.
We have known John for over seven years now, meeting him in 2018 while we were on the Board at Spire Global. John joined Spire after being Founder and CEO at a handful of startups, and started his career at Microsoft. At Spire, John built and led Spire Maritime, the largest and most profitable business unit within the company. Spire Maritime leveraged proprietary earth observation data from the company to deliver insights and analytics to commercial and government customers around the world. John oversaw the unit through its $241 million acquisition by Kpler in 2025.
John is also an accomplished athlete, having played soccer at Southern Methodist University as well at the professional level. Moreover, he is an always optimistic, energetic, and hard-working person that we and our portfolio companies are lucky to have on our team!
Enjoy getting to know John further below!
I’ve spent the past 25+ years building and leading technology businesses around the world. Early in my career, I worked at Microsoft and Ernst & Young Consulting, where I developed a foundation in scaling complex organizations and driving measurable results.
I founded three startups over the years; some were bootstrapped, others were backed by venture or family office capital. These experiences gave me firsthand perspective on the different ways companies grow and fund their journeys. Beyond my own ventures, I also helped scale companies such as WhitePages and Spire Global as an executive, including serving as an executive officer during Spire’s NYSE IPO.
Most recently, I served as CEO of Spire Maritime, where I grew the business from $300K to $48M ARR, leading to its $241M acquisition by Kpler. Alongside operating roles, I also served as an Operating Partner for a private equity firm, helping portfolio companies accelerate growth and scale, and as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Kauffman Foundation.
I hold an MBA (Entrepreneurial Marketing, Strategy) from Wharton and a BBA (MIS) from SMU, and I am the author of a best-selling book The MouseDriver Chronicles, which tells the story of my first startup experience. Having lived and worked in both the United States and Europe, I bring a global perspective to how companies scale. Before my career in tech, I played semi-professional soccer; an experience that’s had a profound impact on my approach to leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
What excites me most about venture capital is the opportunity to learn while giving back. I have spent my career as an operator, building teams, growing revenue, scaling companies, and dealing with adversity, and I see venture as a chance to bring those lessons to founders at the earliest and most critical stages of their journey.
I am also eager to learn how investors view the world; how markets are evaluated, how portfolios are built, and how conviction is formed around new ideas. We are living in a period of extraordinary technological and societal change, and I believe the next decade will shape how we live and work for generations to come. To play even a small role in that evolution, alongside the visionaries we back, is an incredible privilege.
I first met Mike in 2018, when Promus was an early investor in Spire. Over the next few years, I got to spend time with him through board meetings and gatherings, and I found that we simply gelled. Even after Promus exited Spire in 2021, we stayed in touch, and that connection has only grown stronger.
What excites me about joining Promus now is the firm’s focus and conviction in deep tech. Promus has built a strong track record by backing frontier technologies early, whether in space, AI, robotics, or beyond, and they have done it with the discipline and patience those sectors demand. For me, this is the right team, at the right time, in the right space.
Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wife and our 10-year-old daughter, whether that's traveling, exploring new places, or simply enjoying time together.
I am also passionate about fitness. As a proud member of the “5am club,” I am in the gym three or four mornings a week, which I balance with running and the endurance mindset I have carried since my days of playing semi-professional soccer. I’ve found that my workout routine is critical to keeping me grounded and ensuring that I have energy for everything else in my life.
On the lighter side, I am a huge fan of music from the 80’s music fan and I love movies. And as a 16-year Seattle Sounders season-ticket holder, I never pass up the chance to catch a match when I am back in the United States, or any professional football matches I can attend in the UK or Europe.
